| Now I grew up in the prairies - I know snow. But MAN there is a lot of snow in Montreal right now. We are absolutely buried in snow! Cars are covered over their wheels on almost every street. It kinda looked like one big snow drift out there today! And I've almost been blown over a couple times when the wind gets funnelled down the streets. But luckily it's not super cold - and luckily I got super duper great boots last weekend in Whistler that are keeping my feet super duper warm! So what do you do when it's blizzarding outside? Go shopping! Yay! Good thing Montreal has such great shopping! Even though I didn't get to explore the city as much as I would've liked, I was still able to stay warm and check out the stores. But don't worry - it's not all fun and play. I have to go to the lab tomorrow to play with a powerhouse intake model and lots of water. OK well maybe it is all fun and play... | | |

| Monday is International Human Rights Day - the anniversary of the day the UN adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. I went to a Forum on Human Rights at SFU on Saturday and I must say it's hard not to get depressed about the state of the world we live in. There are governments who use and abuse their own people, and there are governments who go to other countries and with the permission of the other country's government, use and abuse the people there.
I recently saw "The Devil Came on Horseback" with André. I feel rather ignorant because although I knew there was something bad going on in Darfur, I didn't know exactly what I never took the time to educate myself. Well now I know. I'm an appalled. I've just been on a journey this past year learning about what happened in Rawanda, about how the western world and the UN failed the Rawandan people. Now it is happening again in Darfur and even though we KNOW and have overwhelming EVIDENCE there is still nothing being done to protect these people.
There is a display on tomorrow at the Jewish Center showing artwork from children who have escaped from Darfur. I've seen a few examples and they all show armed men on horses, villages burning, people fleeing and lots of blood. When I was a kid, I used to draw sunsets. It's just not right...
Hard to think about the "peace and joy" of the season when I know what's going on out there, even in my own backyard. It's almost tougher knowing our complicity as a western nation who participates in massive scale consumptionism. But I'm comforted in a small way knowing that the God I serve is not sitting around a Christmas tree singing carols. He's in Darfur, and he's in the Vancouver downtown eastside, and he's even angrier than I am. | | |
